Glendalough & Kilkenny

Glendalough ist eines meiner Lieblingsausflugsziele in der Nähe von Dublin. Mit dem Auto braucht man nur ca. 30 bis 40 Minuten - und man ist trotzdem direkt mitten in der Natur.

 

Berühmt ist Glendalough vor allem für die Klosteranlagen mit dem komplett erhaltenen Roundtower, welcher 33 Meter hoch ist. Auf dem alten Klostergelände und Friedhof ist direkt eine mystische Stimmung, auch wenn hier im Sommer hunderte andere Touristen unterwegs sind!

Die alten irischen Gräber sind sehr interessant anzugucken - aber man sollte aufpassen, dass man nicht über die Gräber läuft (angeblich sollen einen sonst die Geister dieser Gräber verfolgen). Roundtowers findet man überall in Irland. Sie wurden von den Mönchen, die vor einigen hundert Jahren in Irland lebten, erbaut. Die Roundtowers wurden genutzt um dort kostbare Bücher, Lebensmittel und andere Kostbarkeiten aufzubewahren und zu schützen. Bei Angriffen konnten sich die Mönche im Turm verschanzen. Es war für Angreifer sehr schwer die Türme zu bezwingen, da die einzige Eingangstür meist über 2 Meter über dem Boden waren. Die Mönche nutzten Holzleitern, die dann nachdem alle Mönche im Turm waren hochgezogen wurden.

Glendalough is one of my favourite leisure destinations around the fair city of Dublin. It is only 30 to 40 minutes driving away from Dublin - and yet in the middle of nature!

Glendalough is famous for its ancient monks site with the 33m high round tower. I find that there is a mystical atmosphere around the site and on the graveyard, which is around the famous round tower. The old Irish graves are very interesting to look at - they look mystic in my opinion.

You can find round towers everywhere over Ireland, but the one in Glendalough is one of the best obtained. The history of the round towers is pretty interesting. They were buildt by the monks to protect their valuables, such as ancient books, food and other things. The round towers were very hard to conquer, as their doors were usually 2 meters above the ground. The monks used wodden ladders to enter the round tower and would just pull up the ladder after all the monks were inside.

 

 

 

Glendalough liegt in den Wicklow Mountains (Das County Wicklow wird auch der Garten Irlands genannt, da es dort sehr viele schöne Parks und tolle Landschaften gibt).

 

 

Man kann dort nicht nur die alte Klostersiedlung anschauen, es gibt auch tolle Wanderwege.  Im Ort Glendalough liegen zwei Seen, die man während eines 45-minütigen Spaziersgangs anschauen kann.

 

Dieser Spaziergang lohnt sich - die Landschaft ist total schön und vorallem die Aussicht auf die Seen ist toll!

 

Übrigens ist der Ausflug nach Glendalough sowohl im Sommer als auch im Herbst toll!

Glendalough is situated in the beautiful Wicklow Mountains. The County Wicklow is also called the garden of Ireland, as you can find so many beautiful landscapes and parks there!

 

When travelling to Glendalough, you can find several hiking and walking trails. Easy to reach from Glendalough town are the two lakes with a wonderful panorama! It is such a lovely place - definitly not miss!

 

I love going to Glendalough all year round! It is a beautiful place in spring but also during autumn when all the leaves turn red, orange and yellow!

Auf dem Weg von Glendalough kommt man am Sally Gap vorbei. Von dort ist man auf einem sehr hohen Punkt in den Wicklow Mountains und hat eine tolle Aussicht.

 

Auf der Strecke nach Kilkenny kommt man durch viele kleine und schöne Orte. Ihr müsst beim Fahren auch etwas aufpassen, da auch schon einmal einige Schafe über die Straßen laufen können!

On the way from Glendalough to Kilkenny you will pass the Sally Gap. It is a very high point in the Wicklow Mountains - therefore you can usually (if it is not too cloudy) enjoy a great view over the landscape! While driving you should definitly watch out for the sheep. They don't care so much about cars and just enjoy their dinner along the road!

Nach einem Ausflug nach Glendalough lohnt sich oft die Weiterfahrt nach Kilkenny!

Kilkenny ist eine sehr schöne Stadt mit vielen historischen Gebäuden.

Die Stadt ist zwar klein aber total süß. Überall gibt es bunte Häuser, bunte Türen und überall sind Blumen.

 

Die Schlosstour lohnt sich definitiv. Ich habe die Tour mitgemacht und man erfährt wirklich sehr viel über die Stadt, aber auch über die Herrschaftsverhältnisse in Irland vor der Unabhängigkeit von England.

I find it great to hit the road from Glendalough to the cute town of Kilkenny! I love Kilkenny, because it is a really cute place with old streets, beautiful buildings and a spectacular castle (I love visiting castles!!!).

Even being a small town, there is a lot of things to do and see in Kilkenny. I can definitly recommend to go on a castle tour. The tour takes about 1 hour and the tour guide also provides you with some Irish history. And the castle looks so nice inside. But of course, the stroll around the castle is very nice also!

 

 

Wenn ihr einen Nachmittag Zeit habt solltet ihr euch den Rest der Stadt anschauen (aber natürlich mit Scone Pause).

 

Besonders schön ist Parliament Street welche direkt auf die schöne Kirche St. Canice zuläuft. Auch hier gibt es einen Roundtower, den man sogar von innen besichtigen und hochsteigen kann!

If you have a little more time in Kilkenny, you should go for a walk around town to the St. Canince church. There you can find another round tower which is open to public and you can climb it up!
